Subject: Preliminary Fire Alarm Projects

Date: June 15, 1998

Many in the fire alarm industry have asked the State Fire Marshal's Office if the "Preliminary" Plan Review application could be used for fire alarm reviews, so the industry and design professionals can better understand the problem areas for large fire alarm systems, without the embarrassment of a "Not in Compliance" review letter. Be advised that the State Fire Marshal's Office shall allow proposed fire alarm systems exceeding a cost of $125,000 to be submitted for preliminary review. Please also note projects of this size shall require a licensed architect or civil engineer pursuant to LRS 37:155. Subsequently, the preliminary review letter will be sent to the design professional.

The review fee is $53.00 for the first floor and $30.00 for each additional floor. Governmental facilities are not exempted from the preliminary review fees. The Fire Marshal's Office understands the problems of code compliance for large fire alarm systems and hopes that this new policy will help the fire alarm industry and design professional to provide code compliance systems. We will agree to periodically review the $125,000 threshold depending on the workload in the office.
